User manual data transfer
Download manual as (PDF 48KB)
http://webshare.burki-scherer.ch
At this address, users with a registered account can access our data transfer server (scherersrv.burki-scherer.intern) and establish a connection. You are able to select the language required.
The username and password are case-sensitive. If JavaScript is activated, the password is transferred with 1,024 bit RSA encoding to secure it. Otherwise the transfer is unsecured as clear text.
Notification
Please notify us by e-mail or telephone when you upload data on the server; otherwise we may not notice your transfer until later.
Below you will find information that will make it easier for you to use our data transfer service.
ZIP stream
It is recommended that you compress the files in a ZIP file before uploading it onto our data transfer server. ZIP is a compression process that results in no data loss. The ZIP files are automatically extracted on our data transfer server after uploading and can be viewed in the corresponding list. Zip streaming can be deactivated with the "Administration" button. This prevents the data to be downloaded from previously being converted into ZIP format. This does, however, result in longer download times.
Naming data
The names of the files to be uploaded should follow normal computer conventions. Special characters like asterisks, commas, spaces, forward and back strokes, colons etc. and foreign language characters should not be used.
Navigation
As with all web applications, the site navigation should be used rather than the web browser.
Changing your password
Your personal password can be changed with the button "Administration" if you have the required authority. Lost passwords cannot be recovered and a new password must be issued by our administrator. For reasons of security, it is not possible to save passwords on set-up.
Functions
After clicking on the desired sharepoint (list), various functions (depending on authorisations) are available by using the command buttons on the upper bar. Various formats can be previewed by clicking on the file name.
Ending the session
Please click on the logout button when you want to end the session.
Speed
Theoretically, a 10-mbit Internet connection can transfer 1.25 megabytes per second. Burki & Scherer AG has a dedicated 10-mbit fibre optic Internet connection (as at 2008).
Sample calculations
- 1 kilobit per second = 1,024 bit/s = 2 to the power of 10 (kilo = thousand)
- 1 megabit per second = 1,048,576 bit/s = 2 to the power of 20 (mega = million)
- 10 megabit per second = 10,485,760 bit/s
- 10,485,760 bit/s divided by 8 (1 byte = 8 bit) 1,310,720 byte/s
- 1,310,720 byte/s divided by 1024 (2 to the power of 10) = 1,280 kilobyte/s
- 1,280 kilobyte/s divided by 1024 (2 to the power of 10) = 1.25 megabyte/s
- 1,310,720 byte/s divided by 1,048,576 (2 to the power of 20 for mega) = 1.25 megabyte/s
